MEGA SPOILERS !!!!!!: NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN"T WATCHED THE SHOW!!!!
I recently took it upon myself to rewatch El Hazard : The Wanderers. My first time through admittedly I did not like the series. I am not sure why... I can only surmise that I was so taken with the OAV plot and characters...that the Wanderers seemed almost childish and that it tried too hard to be funny. I couldn't have been more wrong...
The Wanderers starts by a science project of Makoto's gone horribly wrong....I thought my first time through this was lame...but in retrospect it isnt any worse than Ruins being discovered at the school (OAV) ...
I no longer dislike the character of Rune Venus in the Wanderers. While she is a chibi version of the other...she is quite a bit more personable. Rune Venus in the OAV had like an unapproachable aura surrounding her...as did many of the OAV characters...I guess you couldn't flesh out too many personalities in 7 episodes...She is really likable overall and she "works" somehow for the show...if you can understand that...
Afura Mann, who was almost an unknown in the OAV ...almost a second thought...gets good characterization in the Wanderers. I enjoy her haughty know it all persona lol.
I prefer the OAV version of Alielle to the Wanderers version. However, Wanderers' Alielle is not without merit, she is like the cute tag-a-long little sister.
There was quite a bit of fillerish episodes....in the Wanderers as is to be expected.... One example is Jinnai stealing Roshtaria's vegetables...umm...
The only real hangup I had with Wanderers and it is probably a point of contention with others is the character of Ifurita in the Wanderers. I cannot be sold on this character. She is just too goofy. She is cute and funny but just too unbelievable as the Demon God Ifurita.
However , she somehow "works" for this series , since none of the characters take themselves too seriously ...Rune Venus talks to a puppet ...that was great^^
Shame on me I missed all the Pretty Sammy references the first time through..I spotted at least 2...and one shot of Jinnai reading a Tenchi Muyo manga...
So in summation , I now count myself as a fan of this show and a fervent supporter of the El Hazard Universe with the possible exception of El Hazard II ....but thats a different story.
