I've been sluggishly moving up on FY, but I decided to start Chobits yesterday, and I think I'll enjoy this. Hey, it's CLAMP!
Also, I've been watching Kare Kano at Anime Club. The series was off to a great start, very cute and funny, but I've heard at the end it is way disappointing. I'll miss tonight's showing because I don't want to drive at night to school, what with the injury and all, but man, we're at ep 16 and already had two recap eps. What the fuck?

I guess it's a matter of taste in my case, because I watched the first three episodes, but it didn't make me get "hooked" on this one. Then, like you have heard, I found out it gets bad in the end, so I decided to stop watching it....oh well..

Pantsu...... kudasai. Chobits was pretty rad. Hideki is such a spazz-core.
I watched the first 5 eps of Kare Kano. It was pretty good, but for some reason I just never got around to finishing it. I suppose other things took priority..... LIKE HEAT GUY J!!!! WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER FOR THE NEXT VOLUME OF HEAT GUY J?! DAMN YOU PIONEER!!!!!!!!!!!! *COUGH* Anyway, I've heard Kare Kano is very good. But is it really any different than a thousand other typical high school romance shoujo anime?
And as far as clip shows go, Excel Saga 3!!! And then, yet another episode was like half clip show. Of course, they made a joke of it... each time. But gawd damn... oh well it was a great series anyway ::reminds self yet again to work on Excel Saga wallpaper project::

Well, about Kare Kano, I really have to stand by its originality. The main girl is NOT your typical shoujo anime character. She's absolutely hilarious, smart, ambitious, schemey. Also, a lot of the humor relies on use and abuse of super-deformed versions of the characters, of random text appearing on screen, stuff like that. All in all, it works well, and it had the potential to become a standout in its genre. Well, granted, there's a lot of people who don't like it because it's just not up their alley, but assuming you don't mind its lovey-dovey moments, it could be very good.
Except... for some terrible production aspects. I mean, seriously, 4 recap episodes in a 26 ep series is ridiculous. And the regular eps dedicate enough time to backtracking and recapping as it is. More than enough, I'd say. And not giving the series an attempt at an ending is inexcusable. The fans deserve better than that.
But for now, back to Chobits for me! Damn, Hideki sure does spaz out...

I've been watching Wolf's Rain, and it also had 4 recap episodes, and that is a turn down.

Finished Generator Gawl last night. It was pretty good, but not particularly outstanding. I like Masami, and that weird cylinder she keeps her hair in, and how she shoots smoke and fire out of it when she's pissed (which is like every five minutes).

I watched the Night Warriors OVAs last night. Actually a DVD rip *COUGH*EHEM* It was pretty good. Actually, alot better than I expected. The writing was pretty insightful for a 4 episode OVA made from a fighting game. They really tried to cover ALL the stories from all the games and actually managed to pull it off. Once again, I am suprised! And the fight scenes were very good (done by Madhouse, of course) and used alot of signature moves from the games. Not contrived at all. The few people I know who have seen this, they didn't seem to think to highly of it. But, I was honestly impressed. Viz did kinda screw up the subtitles though, misspellings and typos. Also changed some of the names for no particular reason. Oh yeah, did I mention Lei Lei looked like Chun Li in flashbacks? ^_^
Also, if you have never seen Otaku no Video, I strongly urge you to do so at least once in your life! It's absolutely hysterical.

Damn, I hate to say it, but Chobits was a huge disappointment. It's the only CLAMP series I haven't liked.

Nah, it wasn't the ending. Really, the ending would have had to be great to make me happy, as I'd been dissatisfied throughout the series. The thing is, if this weren't made by CLAMP, I guess I'd say it's an okay shounen show. However, considering how much I liked CCS, Angelic Layer, X, and Rayearth, I expected this to kick ass as well. Because of that, it disappointed me to see a show with such a shallow, predictable plot. The characters felt shallow and predictable as well. There were parts in which I was guessing what each chara was going to do in whatever plot situation was going on, and I was usually right. (Well, with Hideki it was particularly easy, since you knew that, whatever happened, he was going to spaz out!)
But yeah, Chii was cute and all, but I've seen the concept of the robo-girl executed so much better in other series. The shounen-ness of it was also skin deep, as was the romance. And the brilliant plot twists that CLAMP has me so used to were notoriously absent from this one. Well, they were attempted, but everything was something you could definitely see coming.
Man, this show even lacked the super-gorgeous art that is typical in CLAMP shows. And I felt Chobits had some potential, because even though the premise seemed kind of cliche, I really felt they were going to do something a little bit deeper about the relationship between humans and persocons, how society viewed this, whether Chii's case was an exception or the norm as to how things were or should be, but this ended up lacking depth too. Maybe I'm just getting really picky as I watch more stuff, but I found this mediocre at best.

I'm curious though D'Art, what did you think of the panties and RPG episodes? ;D
Here's a blast from the past. Recently rented a 5 part OVA from back in the day called Zillion. It was some whacky, old school (1990) fun. Too bad it was a corny Streamline dub. But hey, it's all good.
Watching Macross agian for the first time in years can be quite refreshing. Never being much of a Gundam fan, I always thought the Macross series was better. War drama, romance and idol singers saving the day. How can you go wrong? One thing always puzzled me though. Hikaru and Misa ending up together in the TV series always made alot of sense to me, they're made for each other after all. But in the movie, since they kind of did things differently anyway, why not hook up Hikaru and Min Mei? She's a bit older and more mature after all, and not quite so fickle. Hikaru and Misa's relationship in the movie just seemed a bit more contrived. Oh well.
Media Blasters just randomly sent me this preview DVD catalog thing in the mail. They're having a sale with some pretty good deals. Not much that I really want it seems though. Media Blasters is really picking up alot of Leiji Matsumoto and Masamune Shirow stuff these days. I want to see Gundress, finally! The disc also had a complete episode each of Samurai Deeper Kyo and Twelve Kingdoms. Dubbed, unfortunately. So I didn't really feel like watching them now. Although Twelve Kingdoms does look really cool.

Having read the manga several years ago (and really enjoying it) I kinda wondered, as I started watching the Maison Ikkoku anime, if the anime could possibly be any better. I have to say that it totally exceeded my expectations. Seeing complete nutters like Akemi and Yotsuya brought to life through animation is absolutely hysterical. Plus, you pick up on things that you miss out on in the Viz manga, liek Yotsuya's archaic form of speech. ^^; Now I'm pumped about seeing the rest!
